New medicines are initially too expensive for patients to pay for themselves. Fortunately, in the Netherlands these medicines are collectively reimbursed if they are considered cost-effective.

The National Health Care Institute advises the Minister on whether medicines should be reimbursed, but it frequently faces criticism from pharmaceutical companies, particularly because they feel the decision-making process takes too long. Mark Janssen, Chair of the National Health Care Institute, talks to Henk Jan Out about its approach and the dilemmas involved.
